Dinosaur teeth give glimpse of early Earth’s climate

A previously untapped source of data sheds new light on the climate of the early Earth: fossilized dinosaur teeth show that the atmosphere during the Mesozoic era, between 252 and 66 million years ago, contained far more carbon dioxide than it does today. An international research team at the Universities of Göttingen, Mainz and Bochum made this discovery by analysing oxygen isotopes in tooth enamel. They used a newly developed method that opens up opportunities for research into the Earth's climate history.

Cosmic dust opens window on ancient atmosphere

Since the beginning of Earth's history, tiny particles of rock and metal from space have been hitting our planet. On clear nights, we can even see their traces as shooting stars. Trapped in layers of rock, these micrometeorites can remain preserved for billions of years. An international research team has developed a method that allows them to reconstruct the atmosphere of the past using fossilized micrometeorites. The results were published in Communications Earth & Environment.

More than just larks and owls!

Everyone knows that if you want to enjoy the full experience of birdsong, or carry out scientific research on bird species, you have to get up very early in the morning. Until now however, detailed data about daily and seasonal patterns in birdsong have only been available for a few species, as the observations required are time-consuming. A research team has now, for the first time, analysed the song and calls of 53 European forest bird species during a breeding season with the help of artificial intelligence.

Three ERC Proof of Concept grants awarded to Göttingen University

University of Göttingen Professors – Lutz Ackermann, Timo Betz and Jörg Enderlein – have each been awarded Proof of Concept (PoC) grants by the European Research Council (ERC). These grants provide top-up funding of €150,000 over 18 months to outstanding researchers, who have already received ERC funding, so that they can build on the innovation potential of their findings. This enables Europe’s top scien-tists to develop initiatives that boost the economy and society.

Unlocking the hidden biodiversity of Europe’s villages

Despite the long history of European villages, their biodiversity is not well understood compared to urban areas, forests, grasslands, or farmland. An international research team studied how landscape complexity and proximity to cities affect village biodiversity and human well-being. They found higher biodiversity in villages in forest-dominated landscapes compared to agricultural settings, while nearby cities boost human well-being. The results were published in Nature Sustainability.

Exploring the dynamics of change in urban and rural spaces

Global urbanization is one of the major challenges of our time. A new interdisciplinary Research Unit based at the Universities of Kassel and Göttingen investigates the diverse phenomena that emerge from the interwoven development of urban and rural areas — and the distinct underlying patterns and dynamics of change they give rise to. The German Research Foundation (DFG) will fund the new Research Unit Sustainable Rurbanity – Resources, Society, and Regulatory Systems for an initial four-year period.
